Belagavi Engineer Arrested for ₹1 Lakh Bribe Case

BELAGAVI: The Lokayukta police have arrested Ashok Shirur, Executive Engineer of the Belagavi City Water Supply and Sewerage Board, for allegedly demanding and accepting a ₹1 lakh bribe from a farmer in exchange for releasing a land compensation cheque.

The land, belonging to Yasin Pendhari of Khemalapur village in Raibag taluk, was acquired under the Amrut Drinking Water Project, aimed at supplying water to Mugalkhod and Harugeri towns. The government had sanctioned ₹18 lakh as compensation for 14 guntas of land.

According to officials, the engineer demanded ₹1 lakh to issue the cheque. Following a complaint lodged by the farmer, the Lokayukta officials conducted a trap operation and caught the accused red-handed while accepting the bribe.

A case has been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and further investigation is underway.

Authorities have urged citizens to report bribery or corruption incidents to the Lokayukta helpline to ensure transparency and accountability in government offices.
