Sumitra was a resident of Ghataprabha town in Gokak taluk. She had only recently started her educational journey in the city. Specifically, she joined the Dr BR Ambedkar Post Metric Girls’ Hostel in Sadashiv Nagar just a month before the incident. The shift to hostel life can often challenge new students. Nevertheless, hostel staff and fellow students initially described her as a friendly and confident young woman. The news of her death deeply shocked the entire hostel community.
Discovery and Investigation Detail

Police sources confirmed details of the tragic event. Sumitra ate breakfast with her hostel mates on Monday morning, as usual. Following the meal, she returned to her room and locked the door. Investigators believe the tragic act occurred between 12 pm and 12:30 pm.
Later that afternoon, her friends noticed her prolonged absence. She failed to respond to repeated calls and knocks on the door. Consequently, her friends became immediately concerned. They quickly informed the hostel authorities and the police about the worrisome situation.
The APMC Police immediately arrived at the scene. Subsequently, officers entered the room. They officially confirmed the student’s death by suicide. Police promptly launched a full investigation into the matter. As a first step, they secured the scene. They also began checking the hostel’s CCTV footage. The police aim to collect digital or physical evidence. Specifically, they hope this evidence might shed light on her final hours.
Official Action and Further Inquiry
Moreover, officials have commented on the sad news. Ramanagouda Kannolli, joint director of the social welfare department, confirmed that the police are conducting a thorough inquiry. He emphasized the need for a complete investigation. He expects the truth to emerge only when the inquiry finishes. The social welfare department must also conduct a separate internal review. They will examine current procedures. This includes well-being checks implemented at the state-run hostel facility.
The APMC police formally registered a case concerning the incident. Furthermore, investigating officers are now planning interviews with Sumitra’s family members, roommates, and college staff. These interviews will help officials understand the deceased student’s state of mind. They are also looking for any potential external pressures she may have faced. Ultimately, authorities continue to gather all necessary information. They must determine the full circumstances that led to this unfortunate event. The entire Belagavi community mourns the loss of the promising young student.
