Belagavi, May 12:
Plans to axe 31 trees across key locations in the Belagavi Cantonment area have triggered public outrage, with environmental groups and residents voicing strong opposition to the move.
The trees slated for removal include eucalyptus (Nilgiri), mango, gulmohar, silver oak, and champak. These are spread across areas like Church Road Garden, Saint Mary Church, New Mochi Line, Thimmaiah Road, and the Cantonment Board’s own premises.

Contract Awarded Through E-Auction
An e-auction held on May 5 determined the contractor for the tree felling. Belagavi-based AK Hawaldar Wooden Packers won the bid at Rs 2.1 lakh, outbidding firms from Pune and Goa. The final decision was formalised during the Cantonment Board meeting on May 8.
Cantonment Board Defends Decision
Board officials have claimed that all legal and environmental protocols were followed, and that the entire process — from permissions to tendering — was carried out transparently.
Environmentalists and Citizens Raise Alarm
Despite official assurances, the move has faced criticism from environmental groups. Activist Lingaraj Jagajampi warned that mass tree cutting in urban areas could worsen the city’s climate and disrupt local ecosystems. He also pointed out the lack of clear compensatory measures such as replantation or afforestation.
Call for Sustainable Alternatives
Concerned citizens have called on the board to prioritise environmental sustainability and rethink its approach. As preparations begin on-site, the issue has reignited ongoing debates about balancing development with ecological preservation in Belagavi.
