Centenary of 1924 Congress Session

The Karnataka government has unveiled plans to mark the centenary of the historic 1924 Congress Session. Mahatma Gandhi chaired this session in Belagavi. The celebrations will take place on December 26 and 27. Key events include a Congress Working Committee meeting and a public gathering.

Major Highlights of the Event
- Development of Historic Sites: Authorities will enhance Veersoudha, the session’s venue, by adding a library and a Gandhi statue. The 2.1 km-long Congress Road will feature a temporary Virupaksha Gopura and sculptures along the railway wall.
- City-Wide Decorations: Officials will illuminate 32 km of major roads and 30 circles in Belagavi. The decorations will mirror the festive grandeur of Mysuru Dasara.
- Cultural and Educational Initiatives: The government plans to produce a Kannada version of Attenborough’s Gandhi movie. Cultural events will entertain dignitaries and the public. Schools will organize activities under Gandhi Bharata, themed Navu Manujaru (We Are Humans). These activities include competitions and educational materials.
Commemorative Projects and Memorials
To honor Gandhi’s legacy, the government has announced several memorial projects:
- Officials will install statues and set up museums at Kanabargi and Hudali.
- They will erect memorial pillars at 120 locations in Karnataka visited by Gandhi.
- Organizers will create a photo gallery at Suvarna Vidhana Soudha. This gallery will showcase the 1924 session and the freedom movement.
Additionally, authorities will release a special postal stamp. They will also distribute posters on Gandhi’s Seven Social Sins and the Constitution’s Preamble. Through these year-long celebrations, the state aims to revitalize Gandhi’s teachings and values across Karnataka.
