The theft occurred when two trucks carrying containers of demonetised notes were travelling from the Karnataka–Goa border towards Maharashtra. Although the incident took place within Karnataka limits, the case was registered at Ghoti police station in Nashik district.

So far, Maharashtra police have arrested four persons in connection with the case. However, the prime accused, Thane-based builder Kishore Savla, is yet to be arrested. In view of the serious allegations and the possible political and financial ramifications, the Maharashtra government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to carry out a detailed probe.
Investigations are ongoing, and further developments are expected as inter-state coordination continues.
