Under the new system, marks obtained in the third language will not be included in the final score. However, it remains compulsory for all students to appear for the exam. Instead of pass or fail, students will be assessed only through grades.
The move comes amid demands from pro-Kannada organisations raising concerns over the prominence of Hindi as a third language. Although multiple language options are available, Hindi continues to be the most widely chosen subject in schools.

In the previous SSLC examinations, nearly 1.48 lakh students had failed in Hindi. The third language exam for the current academic year is scheduled for March 31.
Meanwhile, the minister also announced a relaxation in the age criteria for Class 1 admissions. Children aged 5 years and 10 months are now eligible for enrollment across all boards, including CBSE, ICSE, international, and state boards. The two-month relaxation will also apply to kindergarten admissions.
