Belagavi: Continuous rainfall has brought much-needed relief to Belagavi as the Rakaskop reservoir, the city’s primary source of drinking water, is nearing its full storage capacity.

The reservoir’s water level reached 2,470.3 feet on Sunday, just a few feet below its full reservoir level of 2,477 feet. Officials attributed the sharp rise to heavy inflows from the Markandeya River and Jambula canal.
If the current spell of rainfall continues, authorities expect the reservoir to reach full capacity in the coming days, ensuring a stable drinking water supply for the city.
Originally built in 1963, the reservoir’s storage level was increased in 1985 with the addition of six waste weirs and gates across the Markandeya River to meet Belagavi’s growing water demand. Today, the reservoir, managed by the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) in coordination with the Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWS&DB), plays a crucial role in supplying drinking water.
Belagavi, with a population of nearly 7 lakh, requires around 130–135 million litres of water daily. The city primarily depends on the Rakaskop and Hidkal reservoirs to meet its drinking water needs.
