According to police, the victim received a file titled “Wedding Card” from an unknown number. Believing it to be genuine, she downloaded and opened it, after which her mobile phone began behaving unusually—indicating a possible malware attack.

Cybercriminals are suspected to have gained access to her sensitive data, including mobile banking credentials and OTPs. Over the course of several transactions between March 30 and April 2, a total of ₹2,17,705 was siphoned off from her bank account.

The fraud came to light when the woman received transaction alerts from her bank. She immediately contacted the National Cybercrime Helpline (1930) and later filed a complaint with the Belagavi District Cyber Police on April 4.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to trace the accused and recover the stolen money.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and avoid downloading files or apps from unknown sources, especially APK files received through unsolicited messages, as such scams are on the rise.
