Belagavi Zilla Kannada Sanghatanegala Kriya Samiti president Ashok Chandaragi said the organisations had been campaigning for the resolution for the past six months. He said Under-Secretary of the Urban Development Department Nagesh K. has written to the Directorate of Municipal Administration in this regard.

According to Chandaragi, the government has referred to the resolution passed by the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on March 23, 1988, on the border issue. He said the directive also asks that proposals related to the border issue that are considered obvious or inappropriate should not be forwarded to the government in future.

Chandaragi said there is a need for comprehensive implementation of the Mahajan Commission report, in accordance with the 1988 Assembly resolution. He also urged the Union government to implement the report to protect national integrity and prevent recurring disputes.

Kittur Karnataka Sene president Mahadev Talwar said the BCC should pass a resolution declaring Belagavi an integral part of Karnataka in response to a resolution adopted by the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) in the corporation in 2005.

Talwar warned that Kannada organisations would intensify their agitation if the BCC failed to pass the resolution.

Kannada activists and leaders celebrated the development by bursting crackers and distributing sweets at Channamma Circle in Belagavi.
