Belagavi: Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers Association president Kuruburu Shantakumar has urged the state government to adopt an artificial intelligence (AI)-based model for sugarcane cultivation, drawing inspiration from Maharashtra, where farmers have reportedly achieved up to 50% higher yields.

Speaking to the media, Shantakumar said AI technology helps farmers with soil analysis, rainfall patterns, weather forecasts, seed quality assessment, crop monitoring, and disease diagnosis. He noted that while the cost of adopting the system is around ₹25,000 per hectare, subsidies in Maharashtra make it affordable, and a similar model could benefit Karnataka farmers.

He also raised concerns over unpaid dues, stating that sugar factories owe farmers over ₹3,500 crore for cane supplied during the 2025–26 season. Alleging that more than 50 factories have failed to clear payments, he urged authorities to take strict action, including seizing sugar stocks if necessary.
Shantakumar further called for promoting ethanol production from sugarcane and other crops, saying it would boost farmers’ incomes, reduce environmental impact, and help conserve foreign exchange.
