According to traders at the Belagavi APMC yard, nearly 70 truckloads of onions arrived on Saturday, causing wholesale prices to tumble between ₹800 and ₹1,900 per quintal, depending on quality. The glut is largely due to Maharashtra traders clearing out old stock ahead of the upcoming harvest season in November–December.

Adding to the market pressure, Karnataka’s new onion crop has started arriving. However, recent heavy rains have affected the quality, bringing prices for local onions down to as low as ₹200 per quintal.

In response to the ongoing situation, the Karnataka State Agriculture Board has sent a team to Maharashtra to study the market trends and propose measures to help farmers in the coming weeks.
