Belagavi Heatwave: Temperature Crosses 39°C Early

Belagavi, April: The city of Belagavi is grappling with an intense spell of summer heat, with temperatures already crossing 39°C—higher than the usual April average. Known for its relatively moderate climate, the semi-mountainous city is now witnessing unusually harsh conditions, raising concerns among residents about an even hotter May.

The soaring temperatures, coupled with rising humidity levels of around 85% and a drop in wind speed from 14 kmph to 4 kmph, have significantly increased discomfort. As a result, roads remain largely deserted during afternoon hours, and traffic movement has reduced considerably after 10 am.

The heatwave has also impacted local businesses. Street vendors and small traders report a decline in sales as customers avoid stepping out during peak hours. “It has become difficult to keep shops open in the afternoon,” said a local kirana merchant, highlighting the economic strain caused by the weather.

Meanwhile, the demand for cooling solutions has surged. Sales of soft drinks have increased sharply, and households and offices are relying more on fans and air conditioners, leading to a spike in electricity consumption across the city.

Health officials have issued advisories urging residents to take precautions. District Health Officer Dr Ishwar Gadadi warned of rising cases of dehydration, vomiting, diarrhoea, and heatstroke. Citizens are advised to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, drink plenty of fluids, and include fresh buttermilk and fruit juices in their diet.

Meteorologists caution that temperatures could climb further, potentially reaching 44°C in May if current trends persist.
