The victim, identified as Sanjeev Mutteppagol, an employee at the Belagavi Regional Commissioner’s Office, reportedly searched online for a cab rental service on March 27.
According to police, Sanjeev contacted a person identified as Neelam Rajput, linked to a website named Lakshmi Car Rental Goa, to book a trip from Belagavi city to the airport. He was informed that the fare for the trip would be Rs 800.
The caller allegedly asked him to download an application named “Car Rental” through a shared link and complete the booking process. However, the app reportedly failed to install properly.

The fraudster then instructed Sanjeev to make a payment of Rs 149 via PhonePe. When the booking still did not go through, he contacted the person again for assistance.
Under the pretext of helping him complete the booking, the accused allegedly convinced Sanjeev to share his mobile screen through Google Meet. Unaware of the danger, he granted access, allowing the fraudsters to gain control of his phone and banking information.
Police said the accused later withdrew Rs 99,000 from his bank account without his knowledge.
A case has been registered at the Belagavi City CEN Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
