Belagavi, July 30: All auto-rickshaws operating within the Belagavi City Corporation limits must begin charging passengers through fare meters within the next 15 days, District Collector Mohammed Roshan has directed.

Chairing a meeting of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), the Deputy Commissioner instructed the Transport and Traffic Police departments to ensure strict implementation of meter-based fares across the city. Auto-rickshaw drivers have been directed to charge only the government-approved fare of ₹37 for the first 1.6 kilometres and ₹15 for every additional kilometre.
The administration has warned that strict action will be taken against drivers who fail to install or use fare meters or who collect excess fares from passengers.
The Deputy Commissioner also ordered action against private vehicles, including white-board cars, two-wheelers and unauthorized bike taxi services, that are illegally operating as commercial passenger transport.
Auto-rickshaw drivers have been asked to treat passengers courteously, avoid overcharging, and cooperate with traffic police to ensure smooth traffic management. Officials were also instructed to identify old and unfit auto-rickshaws, prevent renewal of expired vehicles, and strengthen enforcement of transport rules to improve road safety and public convenience.
The district administration said coordinated action by all concerned departments will be taken to ensure better regulation of public transport in Belagavi.
