Belagavi: Continuous heavy rainfall in the Western Ghats and Maharashtra has significantly increased water levels in the Krishna River and its tributaries, prompting authorities to remain on high alert in Belagavi district.

According to the district administration, the Krishna River recorded an inflow of over 1.3 lakh cusecs near Kallol in Chikodi taluk due to heavy rainfall in the Koyna reservoir region of Maharashtra. Rising water levels have also been reported in the Doodhganga, Vedaganga, Hiranyakeshi, Malaprabha, and Ghataprabha rivers.
The heavy inflow has submerged nine low-level bridges in Chikodi taluk, including the Ugar–Kudachi interstate bridge, forcing authorities to suspend traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters.
Chikodi Assistant Commissioner Subhash Sampagavi said the district administration has made all necessary preparations to handle any flood-related emergencies. Residents living along riverbanks have been advised to stay away from rivers and avoid venturing into flooded areas.
Meanwhile, the Hidkal Reservoir received an inflow of 20,000 cusecs on Monday, with its water level rising by 2.5 feet in a single day. The reservoir, which has a storage capacity of 51 TMC, currently holds around 38 TMC of water.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation as rainfall continues across the region.
