Belagavi: Ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, the Belagavi district administration has intensified its campaign promoting eco-friendly celebrations by urging citizens to opt for clay Ganesha idols instead of plaster of Paris (PoP) idols.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan appealed to residents to support environmental conservation by following the administration’s ban on PoP idols. He warned that the immersion of PoP idols and the chemical paints used on them pollute rivers, lakes and other water bodies, posing a serious threat to aquatic life and the environment.
The awareness drive gained momentum following a memorandum submitted by the Rotary Club of Belgaum North, which has been promoting eco-friendly Ganeshotsav celebrations for the past seven years by encouraging the use of clay idols through advance bookings.
Roshan appreciated the efforts of social organisations and volunteers working to spread awareness and distribute eco-friendly idols. He also called on public Ganesh mandals, educational institutions and idol makers to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to protecting the environment during the festival.
With thousands of Ganesha idols installed across homes and public pandals every year, the district administration hopes the campaign will encourage more people to celebrate Ganeshotsav in an environmentally responsible manner.
