Belagavi: After witnessing a 29% rainfall deficit in June, Belagavi district received 12% excess rainfall in July, bringing much-needed relief to farmers and improving water availability across the region.

According to official data, the district recorded 213 mm of rainfall in July, exceeding the normal average of 191 mm. Although the southwest monsoon arrived late, rainfall intensified during the month, leading to increased inflows into rivers, reservoirs, streams and waterfalls.
Despite the overall improvement, rainfall remains below normal in Belagavi, Bailhongal, Kittur, Savadatti and Mudalagi taluks. In contrast, Athani, Hukkeri and Kagawad recorded excess rainfall, while the remaining taluks received near-normal precipitation.
The improved rainfall has also boosted storage levels in major reservoirs. The Rajalakhamagouda (Hidkal) Reservoir, with a capacity of 51 TMC ft, currently holds 34.7 TMC ft of water and is receiving an inflow of around 17,000 cusecs. The Navilteerth Reservoir in Savadatti taluk, which has a capacity of 37.7 TMC ft, has 12.7 TMC ft of storage and was receiving 4,862 cusecs of inflow on Sunday.
Agriculture Department Joint Director HD Kolekar said the improved rainfall has enhanced prospects for key crops such as soybean, millet and cotton. The department is also conducting awareness programmes on pest management and crop protection to help farmers maximise yields.
Officials remain hopeful that favourable weather conditions will continue and that the district will receive good rainfall during August, further strengthening agricultural prospects and water reserves.
