Hatkanangale MP Dhairyasheel Mane of Maharashtra has moved a breach of privilege motion against Belagavi Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan, alleging he was prevented from entering Karnataka to take part in the Nov 1 ‘Black Day’ observance. The complaint was submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on December 20.

In response, Belagavi MP and former Karnataka chief minister Jagadish Shettar announced that he would submit a counter-memorandum to the Speaker, urging him not to act on the complaint. Kannada organisations have also opposed the move, staging protests in Belagavi.

Meanwhile, MES leaders accused the Karnataka government of suppressing the rights of Marathi-speaking people in border areas. The renewed protests have once again pushed Belagavi into a phase of linguistic tension, echoing unrest earlier this month that led to the temporary suspension of bus services between the two states.
