Belagavi: Heavy rainfall in Maharashtra’s Koyna basin has caused the Krishna, Vedaganga and Doodhganga rivers to swell, flooding agricultural land in Karnataka’s Chikodi subdivision and raising concerns over crop damage.

The Krishna River is flowing above the danger mark, inundating low-lying farmlands where standing crops such as jowar, black gram and soybean are feared to have suffered extensive damage due to prolonged waterlogging.
Floodwaters have also affected several religious sites. Beeradevar Temple at Bavanasaudatti and Bengalibaba Temple near Karadga village have been partially submerged, while water has entered the sanctum of Datta Mandir at Narasimha Wadi on the Karnataka-Maharashtra border, leading to the suspension of temple services.
Meanwhile, Shirur Dam on the Markandeya River has reached 92% of its capacity. Authorities opened six crest gates on Monday, releasing 2,500 cusecs of water. Residents in villages downstream, including Hagedal, Rustumpur, Pashchapur, Mavanoor and Basapur, have been advised to move to safer locations as a precaution.
The Belagavi district administration has urged people living along riverbanks to remain vigilant, with more rainfall forecast in Maharashtra over the next two days. Officials, however, said rainfall in the Western Ghats region of Maharashtra had eased by Tuesday afternoon.
