The well had remained buried under silt, sewage water, rubble, plastic waste, and other debris for nearly three decades. With financial support from social worker Nitin Khot, volunteers undertook an extensive cleaning and restoration drive to revive the forgotten structure.

During the restoration, the well was cleared to its original depth of approximately 60 feet and further excavated by an additional 10 feet. The team also discovered fresh natural springs at the base, resulting in a steady flow of clear water and showcasing the effectiveness of traditional water conservation systems.

The heritage structure features an intricately carved arch and stone pillars, reflecting the architectural craftsmanship of a bygone era. Historians believe the well dates back to the Adilshahi or early Maratha period. Local residents also recall that the site once served as a discreet meeting place for freedom fighters during India’s independence movement.

Since its revival, the restored well has attracted significant public attention, drawing visitors interested in its history and architecture. The initiative highlights the impact of community participation in preserving heritage structures while simultaneously restoring valuable water resources.

The Pyaas Foundation’s efforts have not only revived a historic landmark but have also helped uncover a forgotten chapter of Belagavi’s rich past.
